REUNIONS IN REVIEW USS Renshaw DD/DDE-499
Hotel: Woodfield Suites City: San Antonio State: Texas Reunion Dates: September 25-28, 2003 Reunion Chairman: Ray and Sandy Smith, Don and Jan McCurry and Committee Members Total Attendance: 110 Shipmates: 57
Highlights: The San Antonio reunion was one of the best for the USS Renshaw. We traveled through the hill country and visited the Museum of the Pacific War, where we saw the plaques in memory of many ships and military units and decided to begin fund-raising to place a USS Renshaw plaque in the memorial garden.
Our pizza party that evening was a hit. On Saturday, we toured the city, visited the Alamo, and rode down the river. The river walk was a popular spot for our group and just a trolley ride from the hotel.
Our banquet Saturday evening was held at Fort Sam Houston NCO Club with guest speaker CDR Keith Reynolds, Commanding Officer of San Antonio Recruiting District, who gave a very informative talk on the Navy today, while remembering the past accomplishments of ships like the Renshaw.
MC Don McCurry had some special insights as usual and Committee Chair Jan McCurry presented awards of appreciation to committee members, our webmaster Glenn Barbee, and long-time reunion planner, Ray Smith. Photos on our website at www.destroyers.org/uss-renshaw.
Renshaw sailors have a special relationship with Tin Can Sailors, Inc. Many of our shipmates are members of this organization of destroyer men. TCS does a lot of good things for the Tin Can community. If you have not yet joined TCS, we encourage you to contact them and look into it. It's a move you won't regret.
