Subject: B.A. Gensler MMCMy name is Al Watkins and I was on the USS Renshaw DD 499 from 1965-66 as a MM3 assigned to M Division Fwd Engine Room.
In doing research for a family history of my early Navy years which I am writing for my sisters; I came upon this information on my former CPO of that time on the Renshaw, MMC B.A. Gensler who was quite a colorful character.
I still remember him jumping up and grabbing the astern steam guarding valve handwheel which was in the overhead above the main engine throttleboard, with his right hand and with his left hand tucked in his pocket, do ten count them ten one arm chin ups.
Also I remember how Chief Gensler led us in getting a generator back on and way back on the ship the night Renshaw was dead in the water from contaminated fuel due to cracked fuel tanks and the typhoon swells were rolling us from side to side to the point when our stacks were almost in the seas.
According to records Chief Gensler is buried at Williamette National Cemetary near Portland Oregon. His marker reads as follows:Burdette Allen Gensler

For those who are interested, Tin Can Sailor has printed a letter I wrote them, regarding the history of the attack and research on our underwater contact of 28 July 1951, in the Yellow Sea, on Pages 16 and 17 of the current issue of "The Tin Can Sailor." The letter is titled "Submarine or Phantom Contact?" The same title as the book Al March and I co-authored, that was published in 1997.

Subject: Clyde TaylorR.Taylor sent me an email in search of somebody who would remember his father while on the Renshaw. His father was a plank owner who served throughout the remainder pf the ship through the time we were torpedoed. He was an enlisted sailor and mustered out as chief petty officer third class(per the son) he worked in the engine room and was a friend of Clarence Isler and electrician. Subject: USS Renshaw crewMr. Barbee: I believe my father, the late Hollis L. Holthaus, was part of the crew of the USS Renshaw during 1958-1960. I do not see his name on the list of deceased crew members on the ussrenshaw.org website. I can provide more info on then-Ensign or Lieut. JG Holthaus (USNA ’58) if that would be appropriate.

Subject: USS Renshaw Shipmate Passing
Hello,
I want to let you know that my husband of 41 years, and a USS Renshaw shipmate, Terence E. Savage (RD2), passed away on January 7, 2009 of liver cancer. He left the Renshaw in 1968. Please add his name to the list of those who have passed. He left behind his wife, 5 adult children and their spouses, and 7 grandchildren, all of whom loved him dearly. He had been honored to serve in the US Navy.

Just want to inform you of the passing of Bill Scareon (aka Meatball). He was diagnosed with lung and brain cancer about 8 months ago. He passed about 7:00 am on 1/11/10.
